A semi-news announcement today: Alessio Cavatore’s Loka – the Fantasy (or Elemental… tag-lines for this one keep changing) Chess game – is now available for pre-orders.
#1 – What Is Loka?
Earlier this year, I had the rare opportunity to interview Alessio Cavatore about his latest personal project Loka, a chess variant that expands upon his previous chess-variant Shuuro.
Now… if you’re thinking: “Chess? What do I care?”… think again (and read on!).
I don’t personally play much chess (and when I do, I just …. lose … inevitably).
In many ways however, that is what makes Loka (and Shuuro) interesting for me.
Both games start from the basis of Chess (e.g. you move a Bishop as you would in Chess), but change it to become more “wargame-like” by adding typical wargaming elements.
- “List-Building“, allowing asymmetric match-ups of, say, a fast “elite” force of Queens and Bishops fighting an “horde” opponent fielding lots of Pawns.
- “Combat Resolution“, meaning figures have to fight it out, using dice, instead of capturing opponent pieces automatically, adding that “wargames-element” of uncertainty and strategic calculation.
- “Terrain“, in an abstract sense that changes the rules for certain tiles on the board (see example to the right).
#2 – Dare To Give It A Try!
If, like me, you enjoy looking at (war)gaming mechanics and what makes games tick, this is definitely the game to try. The entire game of Loka from Wayland Games will cost £31.99, only 2 quid more than a box of Sternguard from GW (and a lot less than a box of Centurions).
And even if you don’t, it’s still a fun (for up to 4 players) chess variant you’ll be able to get your better half, precisely because you get to roll some dice, which may allow one of your pawns to heroically fend off a knight, or you might get stuck in a piece of inconvenient marshlands.
It’s worth it!
