DreadBall – The Futuristic Sports Game, is Mantic Games’ latest Kickstarter project. I’ve written about it previously. Before the Kickstarter launched, I was very excited about this upcoming new ball-sport game. Whether or not the comparison is fair or misplaced, I was getting strong vibes of Blood Bowl from the early pictures (read the game-designers insightful thoughts on this issue). To me, that was a good thing.
Initial Disappointment and a Heated Discussion
Nevertheless, when I saw the Kickstarter online, I could not help but feel a bit disappointed. The contents of the box appeared a somewhat scarce and the pledges looked fairly pricey (though I may have simply been jaded after Reaper’s Bones).
I was looking forward to pledging for at least 2 DreadBall games, but I did not expect them to be so steep (as well as better stuffed with toys).
Moreover, for reasons not worth repeating here, the uneasy feeling that some of the stretch goals and “Kickstarter-only” add-ons should have been in the box from the start.
The Lost Bet and the Apology Due
To make a long story short, I got into a prolonged discussion about the Kickstarter over on Dakkadakka (to the point where frustrated Mods had to reign me in a few times).
Tempers flared and arguments got hot. In the heat of the moment, I decided to bet some money on the conviction of being in the right.
As it turns out, I was wrong after all. I would like to now apologize to Scarletsquiq of Dakkadakka (and to Mantic) for any wrong claims I made.
And of course, to keep my word even in eager bets made on internet-forums, I am now a backer of Mantic’s Dreadball!
Seems like I will get my two boxes of the game after all. The burden is, of course, much lightened by the fact that Mantic’s Kickstarter is progressing quite nicely. By now, as the total of pledges overs at around US$ 115.000,- , the “grab-bag” pledge of Striker is getting filled to the brim with goodies, including a ticket to visit the guys at Mantic over in Nottingham. And I’ll be getting two of those!
Hard to argue against so much new toys!
Either way, I believe (then as now) DreadBall looks likely to be a fun game. And, as soon as DreadBall ships, I’ll get ready to add some posts of myself on how my first matches go.

Oh, and boys and girls, never ever bet money on an internet discussion. Just don’t.
