Warhammer 40K MMORPG Eternal Crusade Arrives 2015

Warhammer 40K Eternal Crusade MMORPG

There has been a plethora of announcements smaller Warhammer 40K-based games for the tablets and browser-gaming recently. This one sounds like it could be a bit bigger.

Behaviour Interactive and Games Workshop are working together to realize “3rd Person Persistent Online Action in the first MMORPG of the 41st Millennium” with Eternal Crusade.

The Press Release

Behaviour Interactive and Games Workshop® proudly announce a new online game in the Warhammer® 40,000® universe: Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade : www.bhvr.com/eternalcrusade . Behaviour Interactive has obtained the rights to create a wholly new MMORPG persistent war experience for PC, PS4 and Xbox One set in Games Workshop’s universe of the 41st Millennium.

In the game, players choose a Warhammer 40,000 race and fight directly as one of their warriors in massive conflicts for territory. It will be up to each faction’s community to determine their own destiny as they vie for control of an entire planet.

“I am thrilled to announce what will finally be the first MMORPG based on the Warhammer 40,000 license,” said Miguel Caron, Head of Studio, Online at Behaviour Interactive. “Eternal Crusade’s team are all MMO development veterans and with the support of Behaviour’s 20+ years of experience this is going to be the online Warhammer 40,000 universe game that fans have been dreaming of for years!”

“Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade is the second milestone in Behaviours new online strategic positioning after last year’s Star Citizen Announcement.” said Remi Racine, President and Executive Producer of Behaviour. “We are very happy with the progress of the online studio and you should expect more similar announcements to come.”

“The depth, breadth and sheer level of detail that the Warhammer 40,000 universe has after 26 years of continuous development makes it one of the great fantasy settings of our times.” said Jon Gillard, Head of Licensing at Games Workshop. “Experiencing the thrill of first hand combat in this world of eternal conflict, with thousands of other players beside you, will be fantastic.”

Eternal Crusade Game Play-Features

Here are a few more bits via www.pr-inside.com. I cannot vouch for the quality or veracity of this information. The official Eternal Crusade website is surprisingly scarce.

Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade is currently in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One and will release in late 2015. Main features of the game include:

  • Experience the gameworld with 3rd-person, behind the shoulder action featuring precision gunplay and brutal melee combat with excruciating finishers;
  • Participate in a persistent online war to conquer the planet, its fate completely in the hands of the players;
  • Become a warrior from one of four initial factions, each unique and opposed to one another: Space Marines, Chaos Space Marines, Orks and Eldar.
  • Participate in truly massive conflicts that simultaneously bring thousands of players to bear over territories and other strategic resources.
  • Get behind the controls of Space Marine Rhinos, Predators, Ork Battlewagons and other iconic vehicles of the 41st millennium; — Hack through genuinely challenging procedural content alongside your battle-brothers and never have the same experience twice;
  • Earn the right to customize your builds in a deep progression system drawing on the rich Warhammer 40,000 universe.
  • Found a Battle Squad with friends and prepare for conflict from your customized shared space in orbit – then drop down to the planet together and seek out glory!

Thoughts?

Would you be tempted to plunge into the universe of Warhammer 40K in an online RPG?

What features would tempt you to play?

What would you want from a game like this?

I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

    Apparently this company has a rough track record with games…not considered a good game dev by many games journalists. I need to look more into it but that’s all I know at the moment

      I am by no means a computer games industry expert, though it seems to me that it is increasingly hard to get the top-developers to work on titles for other IPs, especially for (usually) large projects like MMORPGs.

      With things like LoTR and Star Wars falling short of expectations, the companies with the best talent apparently try to develop their own IPs first, rather than pay royalties for something that doesn’t guarantee success as it perhaps used to.

      I don’t think GW took any financial risks with previous titles, be it THQ or the Warhammer Fantasy MORPG. I doubt they will take many with this one.

        You hit the nail on the head, big companies are less likely to take risks on projects like mmo, especially after the colossal sink hole that is the old republic, didn’t make back its net worth. With that said though, why is gw even bothering to try with a 40k mmo? Their warhammer fantasy mmo, ended up being a WoW clone and failed to peak interest. Sure 40k is a popular IP that carries a lot of weight, but even Warhammer 40k Space Marine, which was fairly popular, paled in comparison to Call of Duty. Heck even sky landers which is a simplistic game at best, destroyed 40k sale records in its first week. The most recent attempt at creating a 40k mmo DM, barely made it into production, and was downsized into a single player experience. This was made pointless however, because THQ was shortly after sold off and DM was chopped. With all of these difficulties I don’t understand why GW has decided to continue on with a new mmorpg?

          I think GW will continue to keep trying (incl. with all those other smaller app and browser games) because they know that their IP is more and more at the heart of the business (same with their sometimes aggressive legal team going after IP violation).

          The miniature-business is constantly being challenged. Though GW arguably still has a technical advantage over most other producers, it won’t stay that way forever. The long-term value will be in their IP.

          That, and the fact that GW likely isn’t taking much risk with this MMOG. THQ and most other things have bombed, but I don’t think GW has suffered from that, not financially and not by reputation.

          If there were a sort of tangible backlash from bad computer games to the perception of the Warhammer 40K IP itself, GW might reconsider.

    Yeah, I just checked out the developer’s website, and I don’t have high hopes for this. They mainly do movie tie-ins, which are… not known for their quality, let’s put it that way. Apparently they aren’t terribly concerned with balance, either. While I would love more than anything for this to be good, I just don’t see it happening at this point.
