Mantic’s DreadBall Season 3 is up for pre-order, and it’s full of all the quirky models and rules I’ve come to love from Mantic – and DreadBall in particular. Cheating Chimpanzee’s, Teleporting Turtles and giant Cthulhu-type tentacle-thingies playing violent Dreadball! What’s not to love!?
DreadBall Season 3 – “DreadBall Ultimate” – introduces 4 new teams, new MVPs, the DreadBall Giants and rules for multi-player games (the last two bundled in the DreadBall Ultimate box).
I am gonna wait a bit to write about “DreadBall Ultimate” until I see a glimpse of the rules. Until then, let’s look at the 4 new teams!
#1 – The Ukomo Avalanchers – The Teraton Team
The Teratons team – the Ukomo Avalanchers – are easily my favourite sculpts from the new teams (and, from what I read, a lot of people agree).
I wasn’t won over by the Teraton Beta-rules, as much as I love the idea of teleporting Turtles. It’ll be interesting to see if and how much they changed for the Season 3 after the beta.
You can new pre-order the Ukomo Avalanchers from Wayland Games for £11.99.
#2 – The Shan-Meeg Seahawks – The Asterian Team
The reception of Mantic’s Asterian (Space Elves) was a bit more reserved. I appreciate that Mantic is trying to move away from common (Space) Elves cliches, both in the rules (they’re cheating bastards in DreadBall) and miniature aesthetics.
Still, they’re a hard sell for me, even though I was looking to pick up a fast, Striker-heavy team at some point. On the other hand, there is an alternative sculpt for an Orx Guard in the pic on the left. I
hope Mantic is shipping the alt-sculpts along with Season 3!
Pre-order for the Shan-Meeg Seahawks from Wayland Games is also £11.99.
#3 – Kalimarin Ancients – The Nameless Team
I love Mantic’s willingness to have a bit of fun with their games and names. The DreadBall team-names ain’t exactly subtle, but it certainly gives DreadBall a very unique charm. It’s the perfect grim-dark counterweight! (Of course, nothing beats the Locust City Chiefs! Right? Right!)
Anyhow, tentacles and all, the “Cthulhu-team” was clearly a fan-favourite during the Kickstarter. They are here. I have little doubt that they will take the world’s DreadBall pitches by storm.
Pre-Order for the Kalimarin Ancients from Wayland Games is £11.99.
#4 - Koeputki Kolossals – The Zee Team
The constantly cheating Zees! Also, a team sculpted by digital means (similar to the Season 2 Robot team).
I am still not sure if I like these sculpts or not. Personally, I might have preferred something a little more mischievous and a little less cute. The Zees with visor, however, are pretty ace.
Similar to the Teratons, I am very much looking forward to reading the final rules on the Zees, as their beta-rules seemed fairly complex, involving massive amounts of dice rolls to cover their permanently cheating approach to the game
Like all other teams the Koeputki Kolossals are available for pre-order for £11.99. Unlike the other teams, the Zees come with 10 players in the box (instead of 8). You do need more of them though!
#5 – Thoughts?
Your turn! What do you think?
- Which of the Season 3 teams is (not having seen the final rules yet) your favourite? Which one is your least favourite?
- Will you be picking up some Season 3 teams (assuming you play DreadBall)?
- Are these in line to what you expected during the Kickstarter last year (assuming you pledged)?
Leave a comment and let me know!
