If you haven’t seen it, Beasts of War and Mantic Games are in the middle of a themed “Kings of War week” over on Beasts of War. If you’ve ever wondered what Kings of War – Mantic Games’ Fantasy Wargame – is all about, this is a good opportunity to have a look at some great videos about the background, the different armies and demo-games of Kings of War on the table.
You can also win stuff! More on that below…
Why Should I Care About Kings of War?
Kings of War has a stigma of sorts, of being “only” a cheap fantasy wargame. And that’s not wrong. Looking at the prices for Kings of War on Amazon, it is clear that price is a major selling point for this game (and why shouldn’t it for a game requiring lots of ranked miniatures).
What get’s overlooked, however, is that the Kings of War rules offer lots of options for different kinds of game-play, and that’s where Kings of War truly begins to shine.
- Timed Games – For a start, players can use a chess clock to move the game along and stop your opponent from spending an hour or two making up their minds on what to do next (no surprise there, with the rules coming from chess-fanatic Alessio Cavatore). Playing under the pressure of limited time can be quite nerve-wracking!
- Expanded Terrain Rules – Increasingly a standard in tabletop wargames, Kings of War includes rules to simulate dangerous locations such as tar pits, swamps and living forests.
- Multi-Player Games – Kings of War comes with the option to field more than two armies at the table right in the (core) book!
- Siege Warfare – complete rules for laying siege to and defending strongholds.
- Campaign Rules – Rules for ongoing wars and taking objectives such as towns and cities. Campaign rules allow long-term story the span multiple battles. Obviously, there are lots of opportunities to combine these with multiplayer rules to good (narrative) effect.
- Tournament rules – All the rules you nee to match your wits in Kings of War in fair, balanced and official ways.
