Mantic Games unveils the Dread Ball site with a countdown to an unknown event in a week’s time. My guess, it’ll be another Kickstarter. Check out the preview pictures inside.
Everything that GW has left behind?
Few things are as lamented by old-time fans of Games Workshop as the slow neglect of some of the cherished specialist games. In turn, no other company has put as much effort into picking up the fan-favourites that GW never seemed to listen to like Mantic. Their Warpath Space Skaven Veer-myn or Squats Forge Fathers are a testimony to that.
I guess it was only a question of time until Mantic picked up GW’s on most beloved specialist game: Blood Bowl.
Mantic’s recent offer now is Dread Ball. The similarities are already in the title. It will be a game of violent football between humans and other assorted fantasy races (likely Orx!). The most notably difference to Blood Bowl is that Mantic seem to have decided to set their game in their sci-fi setting of Warpath – hints of Rollerball is certainly in there – instead of tying it to their fantasy line as GW has done.
Where are the Pictures?
Have a look:
What is the countdown on their website?
If you had a look at Dreadball.com, you will have seen that the site is dominated by a countdown clicking down from – at the time of writing this – 6 days and a few hours.
No one knows what this countdown is for. It could simply be the release of the game. But, call me crazy if you like, I think it will be a Kickstarter. Kickstarters have certainly been all the rage in recent times and this format would be near-perfect for it. It’s a self-contained boxed game, different and more teams would depend on the amount of funding, etc.., etc.. .
Dread Ball would fit Kickstarter like the proverbial glove and then some. What do you think?
