Black Library Teaser: Mephiston Reborn!?

Blood Angels MephistonBlack Library managed to sneak in a little teaser with their latest newsletter. Below their announcement for Ahriman: Exile, they hid a nondescript teaser video called ‘Rebirth’. I dismissed it at first. However, watching the teaser again, it seems that nobody other than Mephiston, the Blood Angels’ infamous Lord of Death will star in this Black Library novel: The story of Calistarius’ rebirth!

The Black Library “Rebirth” YouTube Teaser

Below is the most recent Black Library teaser. Like so many teasers from Games Workshop, it is very minimalistic. No information is given. To be honest, I initially even thought it might be a Warhammer Fantasy teaser – perhaps only because it came in the same email with the ad for Black Library’s Ahriman: Exile ebook by John French.

Why is this Mephiston?

So, I didn’t get it at first. Yet, watching it again, it finally “clicked”. The Seven Days, Seven Nights, Rebirth hints seems rather less subtle in hindsight. It is the story of Mephiston, the Blood Angels’ Lord of Death.

Or, rather, the story of the Blood Angels Space Marine Calistarius and his rebirth as Mephiston.

If you doubt me, read what Lexicanum says about the Blood Angel’s infamous Lord of Death and tell me it isn’t so!

Rebirth

While fighting as part of the relief force for Hades Hive during the Second War for Armageddon campaign, Calistarius became a victim of the Red Thirst. After being inducted into the Death Company, he took part in the assault on an Ecclesiarchy building and was one of many trapped inside when the building collapsed during battle. For seven days, Calistarius lay trapped in the rubble, teetering on the edge of death and madness. Somehow, rather than succumbing to the Red Thirst, he managed to conquer it. By sheer strength of will he was able to suppress and hold in check the feelings of rage and the desire for blood, and in doing so he became something more.

On the seventh night he burst free of his rocky tomb, reborn as Mephiston, the Lord of Death.

Everyone welcome the Lord of Death!

Do you think Mephiston’s origins will make for a good novel?

Who would you like to see as the author? Black Library’s Blood Angels specialist James Swallow, or somebody else?

Or are you still unconvinced?

I would love to hear your opinions! Leave a comment!
