Space Marines Codex Chapter Relics Rumours

Less then a day before the Space Marines go up for pre-order and 40KRadio is sharing a few more details from the Codex. Here are a few details on the Space Marines Chapter Relics rumoured to be in new Codex (according to 40KRadio).


#1 – Space Marines Chapter Relics

There are six Chapter Relics. Chapter Tactics have no effect on Chapter Relics (i.e. there are no Chapter-specific Chapter Relics).

The six rumoured Chapter Relics are:

  1. The Burning Blade (55 pts): Melee, Str. +3, AP 2, Blind, Incandescent: Roll 1D6 at the end of the assault phase – on a “1”, the bearer takes a Str. 4. AP 2 hit.
  2. Armour Indomnitus (60 pts): Grants a 2+ / 6++ save and Relentless. Once per game for one phase it confers a 2++ save.
  3. Shield Eternal (50 pts): Storm Shield that grants Adamantium Will and Eternal Warrior.
  4. Primarch’s Wrath (20 pts): Shooting Weapon with Str. 4, AP 4. Salvo 3/5, Shred and Master-Crafted.
  5. Teeth of Terra (35 pts): Chainsword with Str. +2, AP3, Melee, Rampage, Specialist Weapon, Strikedown.
  6. Standard of the Emperor’s Ascendance (65 pts): Units in 12” with the same Chapter Tactics re-roll failed morale checks and pinning tests. Friendly units chosen from the Space Marines Codex within 6” of the bearer have the Hatred special rule and +1 to the total when determining Assault results. The bearer and his squad have the Fear special rule.

#2 – Thoughts?

All right. No 2 pts. or 5 pts. unique items in the spirit of the Tau Signature Systems for the Space Marines, though the ability to hand out a (very limited) 2++, Eternal Warrior or (finally!) a cinematic Chainsword sounds like good fun.

    very strong relics … ok, the ranged weapon is crap as always. But the shield with 2 melee weapons, ap2 + 3 Strength at initiative .. pair that with the shield and you couldn’t care less about the possible str 4 ap 2 hit.

    The chainsword is good too and cinematic as you put it, worth a pick not only for fluff reasons imo. Pretty decent armour, who cares about the 6++ when the HQ’s got iron halo anways. I know scriptors don’t have it, but when you take a scriptor, you should autoinclude tiggy anway.

    Poor DA, they got all the crap relics, and they don’t even have a terminator weaponlist …

      is that really worth 60 points? especially seeing as hes probably already got a 2+ armour save, youre basically paying for that twice.

    The ranged weapon would be great with a Terminator/Bike Commander as it would synchronize well with those units. Personally, I’m excited for the Burning Blade. Price and risks aside, that weapon looks awesome!

    The only one (or two) that doesn’t suck is the standard, 65 points for Hatred, morale re-rolls and assault bonuses is reasonable. The problem is it just makes the Chaplain even more worthless and redundant.

    The chainsword might be good, I just can’t remember what rampage does. That will make or break it really.

    The big problem is they all cost far too much and their averages suck. The storm bolter can’t kill one MEQ on average. The Burning Blade is worse against MC’s than the power fist, which costs half its price tag. Initiative is irrelevant as most MC’s strike first and against those that don’t they probably don’t pose a realistic threat anyway. The armour costs 4 times that of a storm shield, and its only useful attribute is the 2+ invulnerable, which only comes into its own if you have the ridiculously expensive Storm Shield too. At that point you’re paying enough points to buy another HQ entirely, or a special character.

    The biggest question for me is can any of these relics be used by a character in terminator armor. I like vanilla marines but I also usually run a squad of termies and I usually put my an HQ choice in there with them to add some extra attacks to the squad. However, if you can’t take the shield or the burning blade or the fancy chainsword then I guess I will just keep using my old commander model with a huge powersword as a counts as thunderhammer.

    ok, random question; now battlescribe data just came out, now, it will only allow me to take 1 relic for my chapter master, is that correct? or does battlescribe need to be fixed? little help here

      You can obviously only have one of each relic per army (“only one of each in the universe”), but I see no entry in the army list or the Relics description that would prevent a Chapter Master from taking multiple (different) Chapter Relics.

      Unless it’s hidden somewhere in an unusual spot, I would think Battlescribe needs to correct that.

        Page 159 of the sm rule book. Where it shows the price says an model can replace one wepon with one of the following , that might be it?

          It might be.

          Depends on how you read “may replace one weapon with one of the following”:

          Does it mean each Relic “removes” one weapon (of which the Chapter Master has 3 I think), or does it mean one weapon, and never more than one weapon, can be switched out?

            Chaptev master has 2 weapons an his armor, but that’s my dilema, I just want to take the burning blade and sheild eternal on him, b4 battlescribe data came out that’s how I ran him, having my warlord with a good weapon an eternal warrior with a 2+ 3+ helps my game a lot, he costs as much as a land raider but I see that asw worth it with all the mc’s out there

            4 games daemons orks. Chaos an marines,, chapter master kille lots with the 2 relics, and using the iron hands chapter tacticsss yeah I had fun grav weapons against deamons not that good though
