Spiel 2013 in Essen – New Releases – Part 2

New Releases Spiel Essen 2013

Last weekend, one of Europe’s biggest gaming convention – Essen Spiel – was held in – as the name says – Essen in Germany. Lots of interesting things going on, and several miniatures companies were present to show off their newest games and miniatures.

If you haven’t seen part one of my overview of the new (and pre-)releases shown in Essen, you can read it here!

#1 – Taban Miniatures

Taban Miniatures went to Kickstarter in June and managed to raise well over 100.000,- USD for their Eden board game (to complement their Eden skirmish game). Both the board game – Escape – and new miniatures were shown in Essen.

#2 – Ashes – Dark Side of the Moon

Ashes is a highly innovative idea for gaming. Unfortunately, it didn’t reach it’s target, so it deserves all the more respect that the creators are sticking with it and believe in their idea.

What makes Ashes different is that the Mechs used to play are made from laser-cut cardboard, and are configurable with a variety of options (using magnets supplied with the kits).

The game itself is played on a hex-based table (the picture below is obviously only a prototype).

#3 – WizKids

WizKids licensed the rules used for Fantasy Flight Games’ massively successful Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures game to do the same for Star Trek with Star Trek: Attack Wing. In Essen, they had new releases, including … Deep Space Nine!

#4 – Thoughts?

That’s the highlights for me, though I am sure I probably missed a gazillion other cool games and miniatures. If you know of something from Essen that should go in here, let me know!

Once again, many thanks to Brueckenkopf Online for the great coverage and for letting me use their pictures!

If you like what you see, leave a comment!
