Warhammer 40K in 2013 – The Year in Pictures

2013 is coming to an end. Everyone’s getting ready for the festive days. Christmas presents will soon be unwrapped. And, of course, it’s the time to think back on the past year.

I don’t blog about Warhammer 40K exclusively, but Warhammer 40K, as a game, has certainly been through a crazy rollercoaster of a year. A little retrospection!

January 2013 – Dark Angels

2013 kicked off with Dark Angles. New Speeders, new Ravenwing Knights and the one thing Dark Angels players have asked for since … forever (and where oddly cool about, when it finally arrived): Terminators with Robes!

February 2013 – Loken vs. Abaddon

A “fantasy month” in February, but Forge World kept Heresy Fans happy with the Loken vs. Abaddon diorama.

March 2013 – Chaos Daemons

March had nice double release of Chaos Daemons for Fantasy and 40K. Not all miniatures were well received, though the new Plaguebearers and their Herald seem very popular!

April 2013 – Tau Empire

The new Tau Empire Codex launches the “summer of big models” with the Riptide!

May 2013 – Fulgrim

May 2013 saw Warhammer Fantasy High Elves, Radagast on his Rabbit Sleight (guess I missed the chance to paint one of those in Santa Claus colours) and … Fulgrim the Illuminator.

June 2013 – Eldar

Eldar Wraithknight

Two months after the Riptide, the Eldar one-up the Tau with the Wraithknight. Seriously, Games Workshop’s “official” sales-pitch for these was “and you thought the Riptide was big?“.

Make’s you wonder what’s coming in 2014, no?

 July 2013 – Apocalypse 40K

More big models follow for Apocalypse 40K 2.0. More controversy too, especially concerning the Khorne Lord of Skulls.

August 2013 – Sicaran Battle Tank

August was (comparatively) a quiet month on the Warhammer 40K release front. People were digesting Apocalypse and GW themselves were getting ready for Space Marines. Forge World, however, kept the Heresy rolling, including with the Sicaran Battle Tank, which holds a place of honour in 40K-lore as the “missing link” between Land Raider and Predator.

September 2013 – Space Marines

The most controversial new miniature in 2013?

I would’ve thought it impossible that something could beat the controversies over the large new Tau and Eldar miniatures, but the new Space Marine Centurions probably did!

October 2013 – Codex: Adepta Sororitas

Old-school Demon-winning Sister of Battle by Andrew Lum

For the last quarter of 2013, Games Workshop launched into a serious Warhammer Dark Elves update. Few Warhammer 40K miniatures game out after the hectic first 9 months.

On the other hand, October 2013 gave 40K-players the first taste of the digital turmoil in the making, with the release of the Digital Codex: Adepta Sororitas (without new miniatures).

November 2013 – Codex: Inquisition

Inquisitor with Retinue

Codex: Adepta Sororitas gave an aging 40K army a new lease on life. Codex: Inquisition, a month later, was the first digital product that messed with the structure of the game, introducing the idea of an Inquisitorial Detachment.

Still no new miniatures (unless you convert Dark Elves into an Inquisitor’s Retinue).

December 2013 – Lorgar Aurelian

Lorgar by Forge World

December this year saw some of the most controversial releases for Warhammer 40K yet, Dataslates and Escalation first among them. However (as it usual for GW, despite crazy Tyranids-in-December-rumours), there were no new miniatures from the GW Studio.

Forge World, on the other hand, is speeding up the releases for their Primarchs a bit with a new miniature for Lorgar, Primarch of the Word Bearer (Traitor) Space Marines Legion.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Great post ! You definitely pointed out some of the major things for me this year, even some I thought were less “spectacular” than the other ones (Sicaran, for instance).

    Nice pics too !!!
