Storm of Vengeance Previews – Feedback Wanted!

Once upon a time there was a campaign for Warhammer 40K, which pitched Dark Angels Space Marines against the might of Ghazghkull Thraka himself: Storm of Vengeance.

To my surprise, my (rudimentary) google-fu still found a pdf for the Storm of Vengeance campaign on the GW website.

More recently, game developers Eutechnyx dropped the news, that they’v partnered up with Games Workshop to create a lane strategy game for mobile devices based around this classic bit of Warhammer 40K warfare.

Development of the game appears to be marching ahead at a brisk pace. Now, Eutechnyx is looking to get some feedback on their designs for these two iconic Warhammer 40K factions.

#1 – Storm of Vengeance Game by Eutechnyx

Storm of Vengeance tells the story of a pivotal moment in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, during the legendary planetary conflict on Piscina IV. Featuring two of Games Workshop’s most cherished characters, Grand Master Belial and Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Thraka, Storm of Vengeance offers the player the chance to command the tenacious defence of the planet with only 100 Dark Angel Space Marines, or attempt it’s annihilation using the cunning of the Ork Waaagh! and their telly-porta technology.

Head over to the Eutechnyx website, if you want to read to full press release.

If you are wondering what a “lane strategy game” is, I was told that , in a nutshell, the (single-player) game will focus on a series of missions inspired by the legendary Battle of Piscina IV. In each mission, the player has to fight their enemy on a battlefield formed from 5 lanes. Likewise, the player has 5 building slots.

Probably an advanced version of MOBA (?)

Here is a bit more information that the people from Eutechnyx were kind enough to share.

Some units will be able to fire into neighbouring lanes, some can move between lanes (Assault Marines), and vehicles such as Ravenwing and Ork Trukk have special roles, moving at speed or acting as a rolling shield and fire support platform respectively.

Outside of missions the player can unlock a large skill tree that gives new unit and building types, special abilities and new customizations for their units. When you build new units, you can provide them with different weapons, grenade types, special skills etc….

The idea of the game is to provide a simple gameplay style that people can enjoy in short bursts, while also packing in a lot of optional depth and skill to the game. Our original design challenge was to get the feel of a real time strategy game into a mobile format.

Ok. Enough about the game though. Time to look at some of the concepts…

#4 – Feedback Wanted!

The previews above come with two caveats: First, they are work-in-progress. They aren’t the finished product (the game is scheduled to be released in Q1 2014). Second, because they are work-in-progress, Eutechnyx is eager for feedback from Warhammer40K fans and players.

So have a long, hard look and let me know what you think about these concepts.

  • What do you like about them?
  • What do you don’t like about them?
  • What would you change, add or take away?

Leave a comment and let me know what you think!

@TheShellCase @GreatRedoubt Yeah I don't think they've sculpted a 40K mini in a decade. Still, they are bedrock from the earliest days of GW - 16 hours ago

I love the idea and I’ve always advocated a League of Legends style game within the GW IP. I’m just not sure about this company – do they have the financial klout to make it successful/worthy of our time?

Also, a rhino? How does that fit? Assuming this is similar to the multitude of current MOBAs I cannot fathom how a Rhino would be utilized.

I’m massively excited by it though and hope it does our setting justice.

I like them all concept wise, I think the marine stuff looks good as is as does the bomb squig, but something is not sitting right with me about the Gretchin, specifically how the guns been done (the rope/cable/tape holding the barrel on and the barrel itself), and the bandages on the feet (they just look like a texture on the skin rather than separate parts

The Stormraven’s bonnet guns could do with more detail, while the Bomb Squig needs a burning fuse or two. But they look good, and I’m interested to see this develop.

Its not a MOBA, its a castle defense style game. Think plants vs zombies.

  • Warrior Warlock

This sounds interesting. Im not sure how useful feedback on detail would be when the end units are likely to be very small. I agree with whats been said so far in particular that some of the dynamite sticks need to be lit. In addition i think the squid would benefit from a more crazed look. It looks too serious to me now. While the marine would benefit from a utilitybelt with extra mags and grenades, but perhaps its just the shading thats hiding whats already there.

I wish eutechnyx the best of luck and appreciate their efforts to collect community feedback during the development stage. Its a great way to foster engagement.

It’s not a moba, you can read the ama here: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1s0mqq/we_are_licensed_games_workshop_developers_we/ the dev has told it is just look like their previous game Ninja Cats vs Samurai Dogs and you can watch videos of that game on youtube

  • Neal

So, it will be a glorified version of Plants vs. Zombies?

    • YoshiEnVerde

That’s what it sounded like to me…
I’ll still try to play it, God knows I enjoyed PvZ, but it won’t be a huge pressing matter really

Sounds very interesting! looking forward to playing as the Dark Angels in a video game haha, as for feed back,i think the bolter needs to be black and the color for the tactical marine needs to be a bit darker.Dark angels are the ones that got me into Warhammer 40 back in the 4th ed came out and that look just stuck with me for them .The Raino and the storm raven need to be a bit lighter still dark but not as dark, the gun for the Grecthin i think needs a little bit of a rough texture like grit to the barrel
