7th Edition: Psychic Phase, Daemonology and Tactical Missions

daemonology book cover

More and more information appearing on the soon-to-be-released 7th Edition for Warhammer 40K. I believe we can safely say now that this will not be a “minor” revision, but is about to change the game of Warhammer 40K in significant ways.

The most spectacular (IMO) revelation was the idea of “unbound” armies, turning 40K most definitely into a near-Apocalypse game. Other noteworthy snippets are the return of a “Psychic Phase”, the introduction of (generic?) Daemonology and Tactical Missions.

#1 – Psychic Phase

The snippets we’ve seen…

A pool of Warp Charge dice is created at the start of the psychic phase, equal to the roll of a D6 plus the total of your psykers’ Mastery levels. This Warp Charge pool is used by psykers to successfully manifest psychic powers. You can use as many dice as you like but the risk of suffering Perils of the Warp (now a table you roll on, with some very scary results) is increased.

Enemy psykers can draw on their own Warp Charge pool to Deny the Witch and nullify psychic powers, meaning the psychic phase alone is a hotbed of bluff, counter-bluff and tactical decision-making.

#2  Daemonology

The snippets we’ve seen…

There’s loads more to discover in the psychic phase, not least a new discipline in the form of Daemonology, available to all psykers except Tyranids.

There are two types of Daemonology, Sanctic and Malefic, and the latter is going to change the future of war altogether – it enables psykers to summon the fell denizens of the Warp to do their bidding on the battlefield.

#3 – New Missions & Tactical Objectives

The snippets we’ve seen…

[...] six new Maelstrom of War missions. These use a suite of 36 Tactical Objective cards that fundamentally change the ways you can play Warhammer 40,000, allowing for more dynamic games overflowing with strategic choices. In Maelstrom of War missions, players will invariably have several Tactical Objectives in play at any one time. They offer specific conditions that, once met, award victory points at the end of your turn. These range from controlling objective markers to successfully manifesting psychic powers, to eliminating enemy characters and vehicles, [...]

#4 – Thoughts?

Sweeping (and retro-)changes abound.

Let me know what you think!

    What? We can’t use Daemonology?!

    • http://pinsofwar.net/ Zweischneid

It’s what the White Dwarf said… yeah.

      • The Hive Mind

I was just joking lol. I’m glad Nids can’t use Daemonology, how horribly un-fluffy would that be? Besides I think Daemons are still mad after Shadowbrink…

        • KillerHurtz

As horribly un-fluffy as GK summoning them?

          • Sam

It is highly likely that GK will be able to use Malefic Daemonology, as they will most likely use Santic Daemonology to banish daemons.

    • BrianDavion

I dunno why, tyranids summoning deamons is no stupider then necrons summoning them

      • http://pinsofwar.net/ Zweischneid

I don’t think Necrons have Psykers in the first place.

      • Dave

Says in the nid book they have no presence in the warp, no souls, lusts, desires etc

  • DarkStarSabre

    So…we get a 40k magic phase?

Oh youngsters, 40K had a psychic phase more than 20 yrs ago, not having one is a fairly recent development. In fact, one had to buy a $35 US expansion set called Dark Millennium for the psychic phase rules, templates and cards back in 2nd Edition.

      • DarkStarSabre

Funnily enough I was already aware of that. Comically enough 40k’s psychic phase with all the phase rules, cards and templates originated from the same sort of magic phase Fantasy had in the current edition at that time. Just seems somewhat odd that we’re once again going back to a cloned phase – though further information that has come out seems to indicate that it will be somewhat different – we sure as hell didn’t need a miscast table to come over though.

Good to see that psykers have a place in the game now, as they are supposed to be very powerful individuals.

any info about what will be out for pre-purchase next week?

40K 7th Edition – The Quest for More Money! Sales are soft, so it’s time for a ‘new’ rulebook again, Never mind it will still be 95% the same creaky and clunky game system it was when Rogue Trader was released..and that was hardly clever or innovative back in the 80s, let alone now.

Also reeks of GW just giving up altogether…we can’t do anything interesting, clever, or creative with our rules, so we’ll just let the players…do whatever they want! They are a miniatures company, not a game company. Or so I’ve heard….

Anyone remember when GW said that they would never go back to cards, guess that was a never say never moment!
