Spiky Space Marines – Forge World’s Reaver Attack Squad

Forge World’s Friday release is here – The Sons of Horus Reaver Attack Squad of Heresy-Era Space Marines. With their spikes, chainaxes and ornaments, these guys definitely bring a strong Chaos Space Marine vibe to the Horus Heresy range.

Thoughts?

These are clearly traitor-marines, not proud and noble Luna Wolves.

I think they are very very nice, and far far too expensive, even for a premium product.

Well, it’s a premium hobby these days …(

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

40K might be, and 30K certainly is, but I don’t think its true of the hobby as a whole. Skirmish games are all the rage and some are very affordable, for example my whole SAGA force cost £16, that single Forgeworld squad is twice that. Today I was talking to a friend who was telling me about a new Samurai themed skirmish game from Osprey, I can get into this for the price of a Heldrake…

        • http://pinsofwar.net/ Zweischneid

True. I suppose I still use “hobby” as in “The Games Workshop hobby”, even though I probably shouldn’t :)

      • Wolfgard

GW is a “premium” hobby if you believe the hype but the price is to the point where I cannot recommend the game in good conscience to new players. Unless they have loads of disposable income/time the price point is just too high for most. I’ll take them to infinity, warmahordes, or dropzone commander instead. There are just too many competing companies that create better models(Scibor), games that cost less to get into(Infinity), or games that give a larger sense of scale(Dropzone Commander).

If I didn’t already have two standing armies there is no way I could play the game now. Even my collection has been focused down to just those two to finance army updates. As for buying new items, rather than buy items when I want them, my buying schedule has decreased until I can fit them in my painting schedule.

        • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

I agree absolutely. I think Warpath is actually the closest thing to 40K though if you want that big sci-fi battle fix, and is reasonably cheap in comparison. All the rules and lists are free which makes a huge difference.

          • http://pinsofwar.net/ Zweischneid

Perhaps. I do play DreadBall, cause it is fun.

That said, though the rules may be free, the Warpath miniatures are up there with GW in pricing. GBP 15 for 10 Corporation troopers, where GW’s IG cost you GBP 18 for 10. Mantic’s 5 pack of Enforcers are actually more expensive than GW’s 5 packs of Marines (Assault, Devastators, etc..)

And there’s – in my opinion – no arguing GW’s hard plastic full of options, extra bitz and variants with Mantic’s “no-options” restic.

For what it delivers, Warpath is more expensive than GW

          • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

Some of them are cheap, some aren’t. I think Mantic took their eye off the ball when they made all their new lines out of Restic, expensive and awkward to work with.

I’ll buy their plastics, but proxy other stuff. I have EM4′s old marine-alikes which make extremely cheap Enforcers and Prince August’s bumper bag of 80 plastic Warzone figs for £15 or EM4s plastic troopers makes good Corporation grunts…

That said though, the money you save by not buying a £30 codex and £50 rulebook will buy you a lot of Mantic minis, even the resin ones, more than enough for an army.

          • http://pinsofwar.net/ Zweischneid

Fair enough. But “GW-at-retail-prices” vs. “Mantic-stuff-I-proxy-from-past-bargain-deals” isn’t really a fair comparison.

And I agree that free rules helps a lot. No doubting there.

But if you look at miniatures, Mantic is hitting the premium segment hard. Warpath is even comparatively cheap. I’ve considered building myself a DreadBall fem-corp team out of GW Dark Eldar wyches… because Mantic’s prices are eye-watering (for, IMO, comparatively poor Restic figures).

I love DreadBall. I think Warpath could be a great game. But Mantic isn’t really much cheaper.
