Warhammer 40K 7th Edition – Three Books, One Game

White Dwarf 1

Interesting previews from the (presumably) upcoming White Dwarf magazine are making the rounds. One interesting snippet, the new Edition of Warhammer 40K will swap the big, heavy rulebook for a triplet of books… one for rules, one for the background and one for lots of Warhammer 40K artwork.

Source of these is Millest Mediocre Meanderings (hope I spelled that right)!

Scanned White Dwarf Pages

The prices and pagecount are allegedly as follows

Warhammer 7th Edition: Price: roughly $80

3 hardcover books in a slipcover.  Pagecount of all three is about 450 pages in total:

  • The Rulebook – 200 pages
  • History of the Warhammer 40K Universe – 128 pages
  • Picture book – 114 pages

Thoughts?

Still expensive, I think, but the format seems a lot more approachable than the old door-stopper.

I am looking forward to the first glimpses of the book next weekend!

The current huge tome is certainly not practical for transport or even just to flip through during games, far too unwieldy. So I would agree that splitting it into separate volumes is a good move for customers. At this point for existing long-time customers, however, anything but the actual rule book is pretty superfluous. I have every rule book since Rogue Trader and decades of other publications from GW, at this point I really don’t need an expensive background book or miniatures photo gallery.

Well, while the separation will be practical for transport, it appears you will not be able to buy these separately. At least not initially.

If/when I purchase this edition rulebook, I am going digital. The books are just not conducive to transport and travel any more

Sounds good. I hope GW makes sure the quality is right on this one.

If not the 40K rulebook, what else?

I’m already debating whether to buy it right away or wait and see if I can buy “just the rules” down the road. I don’t play very often so it’s not like I need it immediately. We spend a ton on Warhammer, but I’m trying to be a little more practical about it these days and not give up too much for things that aren’t useful at this point now that I’m getting into my “sunset years” of hobby (and everything else too I guess).

Hmmmm sunset gaming ;) Know what you mean

It’ll probably show up on eBay individually.

Everything they’re doing for 40k I want in WHFB. My book shelves have limited space. I’ll probably go digital with these from now on.

i’m going digital as it is $140 for the physical copy here in australia, which is even more then the 6th ed rulebook, but i do love the idea of the 3 seperate books,it makes sense
