White Dwarf Issue 7 – Knights, Daemons & Apocalypse

White Dwarf Apocalypse Damocles

White Dwarf Weekly 7 arrived!

When I heard this weeks release was a 40K Apocalypse campaign supplement, I was a bit torn. I love campaign books, but Apocalypse still hasn’t really entered my gaming.

I still don’t know if I’d ever buy War Zone: Damocles, but this weeks White Dwarf is surprisingly good, not least because it is a bit more diverse, with a bit for “everyone”, than previous issues of White Dwarf Weekly!

#1 – War Zone: Damocles

Warhammer 40K War Zone: Damocles

I have an odd love-hate relationship with these Apoc supplements. I really love good campaigns, like the one provided in the Iyanden Supplement.

I rather hate all those Apoc Formations, mostly because I don’t play Apoc and they seem like a waste of (preciously little 68 pages of) space. This one comes with 15 Apocalypse Datasheets, which is 15 out of 68 pages that aren’t for me.

Admittedly, I am not the audience for this one. If you are, this may well be interesting for you.

#2 – Rules for Flamers

White Dwarf Flamer Rules

One of the innovations of the new White Dwarf formats is the return of rules (or rule teasers, if you’re nitpicking).

This week, we get rules for Exalted Flamers of Tzeentch for both 40K and Warhammer Fantasy. To be fair, I wasn’t aware they were missing, but here they are.

Similar to the rules for the Imperial Knights a few week ago, you’re missing all the bureaucratic detail on FoC, etc… that you would find in a Codex/Army Book. On the other hand, these rules certainly are enough to put an Exalted Flamer on the table to try it out, before paying for a full Codex, etc…

#3 – The Third Expansion

The Third Expansion

Finally, there is an interesting little article on the background of the Tau Empire’s Third Expansion, which obviously is the backdrop for this weeks Apocalypse War Zone: Damocles release!

It’s a “background article” in the White Dwarf, complete with a fun little “Heroes of Damocles” sidebar! Hurray!

Loved this one.

Admittedly, it’s written in an odd, somewhat stilted “interview-style” of the White Dwarf staff interviewing Simon Grant. I would have preferred a straight write-up, but it works for me.

I am definitely warming up the the Damocles campaign after reading this one. I wish they’d do a non-Apocalypse version of War Zone Damocles, in other words, perhaps a ”story-only” version, or better yet, one with missions for smaller ~ 1.000 to 1.500 pts. 40K missions (and the odd Kill Team scenario) woven into the story).

There is a Black Library anthology coming out to go with the War Zone: Damocles book, so maybe I’ll take a look at that one.

#4 – A Little for Everyone

Hobbit Miniatures

The main reason I liked this issue is the fact that it feels quite diverse. I mostly talked about Damocles, which is the main release of this week. Still, there are also

  • A Paint Splatter on Helbrutes, an ‘Eavy Metal Helbrute article, and an announcement for Helbrute Datasheet (background only, I think)
  • An Apocalypse Tactics article
  • An Imperial Knights Apoc Datasheet
  • A Jeremy Vetock column on explaining “the Hobby” to non-Hobbyists
  • And …. drum rolls … a Hall of Fame on a Hobbit miniature (they still exist!)

Remember that the White Dwarf Weekly still is only 30-odd pages, so the amount of variety they managed to squeeze in there is surprising. There’s more content here than in many of the old 100+ pages White Dwarfs from last year.

Let me know what you think!

GAH! They introduce rules for the Exalted Flamer without his chariot and STILL fail to address the tactical shortcoming of the unit!!! It is a shooting unit with two firing modes: D3 18″ S9 AP2 shots or S5 AP3 Template with Torrent, both seemingly good except for the fact that they are classed as HEAVY! So, you have a short ranged shooting unit that CAN’T FIRE IT’S WEAPON IF IT MOVES TO GET IN RANGE!

Was it too difficult to just give the unit the Relentless USR or classify it as Jet Pack unit type?

So, this version of the unit is just as useless as the Chariot version it is meant to supplement. :/

Ahh…. I vaguely remember that issue.

Bad to hear it’s still not fixed.

Yes, it’s very frustrating that GW’s rules designers are so unaware of rules conundrums in their material. In fact, creating this dataslate introduces yet _another_ rules query:

It states that the Exalted Flamer is an Independent HQ but that it counts as a Herald. What exactly is the significance of this classification? In Codex: Chaos Daemons it states that 4 Heralds may be taken as a single HQ choice. But dataslates are separate from FOC aren’t they? Then what does this MEAAAAAN?!

GW GAMES DESIGNERS, YOU BEING CONFUSING! STAHP!!!!

        • Bobthemim

probably that he acts like SkullTaker or Changeling.. they are singular hq’s even if you can take 4.

        • Dan

It is like Belakor or Cypher. It takes one of those herald slots in your daemon FOC. Only the formations are out of the FOC. This is not a formation. I think everything is quite clear.

    • Trentat

The only way I can see to make this unit viable is selecting a Level 3 Psychic Mastery Daemon Prince (or allied Chaos Marine Sorceror, I suppose) with Biomancy in the hopes of generating the ‘Endurance’ power. That would convey Relentless, It Will Not Die and Feel No Pain USR’s on the unit, IF you are fortunate enough to generate that power and cast it successfully, without a Rune Priest nullifying it.

It seems like a lot of effort and additional points expenditure, not to mention a bit of chance, just to create the sort of synergy that would make this unit function.

    • Bobthemim

so a unit with a 19″ AP3 threat range is considered bad now?

      and 1-3 ap2 shots at 18″?

Stick him in a bastion and dare anything to com near

      • J

Hmmmm, didnt think of that, thank you kind sir i must try that sometime

      • Dan

I would better join it to a squad of horrors and put them in the edge of my deployment zone with the objective and behind the aegis line. Like that they can control a big ammount of the field while staying protected. 18″ is not that small of a bubble. Even better with a herald of tzeentch to make horrors scarier. Then add lord of change and daemon princes to attack with and you have a fully prottected backfield.

It is only 5 points more then herald of tzeentch with no upgrades. For that cost I can have a MEQ killing template and a d3 lascannons (short range but still) I take it. The biggest improvement to the chariot is that the flamer is much more survivable in the unit of other daemons.
