Poll: The Best 6th Edition Codex for Warhammer 40K

polling station

In many ways, an era is coming to an end next weekend, when Games Workshop will release the first Codex for Warhammer 40K 7th Edition: Codex Orks.

It struck me that now would be a good time to take a look back at the nearly 2 years of 6th Edition and ask, which of the Codexes released between Codex Chaos Space Marines in October 2012 and Codex Astra Militarum this April, in your opinion, the best of the lot.

#1 – The Codex Selection Caveat

Once I had the idea to launch a poll, I actually got stuck and which Codexes to include in the poll (Digital? Supplements? Mini-Codexes like Imperial Knights?), and which to leave out.

The term “Codex” just isn’t as precise as it used to be, I suppose.

Ultimately, I went with the wikipedia-version, including all Codexes that can be played without another Codex (including Digital and “mini-Codexes”), but excluding Codex Supplements that require another Codex to be played.

I voted for the nids- a heavily maligned codex, I understand, but – I love what was done with it. The instinctive behavior changes make me intentionally leave some units out of synapse (preferred enemy). Not a fan of what happened to some of the units, but I love what they did with the tervigon. you want to play the swarm now, you really have to play the swarm. I think the rewrite makes the army play much closer to the fluff.

Daemons, so many devastating builds, ridiculously good troop choices, constantly a top tier army. They got even better in 7th. CraziNess.

I voted for Eldar, reasonable fluff, good art, and lots of useable builds. Somewhat overpowered, but I think most of the problems are due to the stupid implementation of the Battle Brothers rules. The Eldar codex actually introduced a new unit unlike many of the others which reduced options and took units away.

I voted for Space Marines because of the amount of new stuff it contained relative to its predecessor. Grav-weapons, Chapter Tactics, the Black Templar codex rolled into it, fluff about non-Ultramarines, lots of new art – it gives one so many options. It is especially impressive since Space Marines are the boring default faction.
