How To Paint Tau Armour In 3 Simple Steps

Recently, I found myself painting a lot of Tau, so I thought it would be a good idea to share my paint-recipe for easy Tau armour. It really can be done in three simple steps.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial.

This painting tutorial is a guest article by Tom from Mini Brush Studio.

For painting the Tau armour, I used the following Citadel paints:

  1. Tau Light Ochre (Layer)
  2. Agrax Earthshade (Shade)
  3. Ungor Flesh (Layer)

Step #1 – Base with Tau Light Ochre

First, I give the armour a base coat of Tau Light Ochre. This is not a Citadel base paint, so more than one (thin) coat might be necessary to achieve the best result.

Step #2 – Shade with Agrax Earthshade

In the second step, I shade the armour with Agrax Earthshade.

If you make any mistakes in shading the model with Agrax Earthshade, simply correct any errors later (once the shade is dry) with Tau Light Ochre.

Step #3 – Highlight with Ungor Flesh

In the final step, I highlight the armour plates with Ungor Flesh.

Showcase – Tau Skyray

The example used in the tutorial is a Tau Pathfinder.

However, I use the same technique for virtually all bits of armour in a Tau army. The brown armour panels of the Tau Skyray above have been painted with the exact same method.

nice tutorial, thanks. I have a very broken tau skimmer of some sort which I got at a car-boot sale to use as terrain, I might get around to using it now!
