Wayland Games to Make their own Tabletop Games

Unexpected news coming through my Wayland Games newsletter.

It appears that the UK’s largest online retailer for miniatures, miniature and board games is no longer content with shipping other people’s products. They’ll be making their own!

Preciously little information, aside from Wayland partnering up with Well Forged Films.

From the Wayland Games Newsletter

Here’s the press release from the newsletter.

Well Forged Films and Wayland Games are proud to announce their partnership to produce a range of tabletop games based on their own original IP.

Their first collaborative project, codenamed HOX, incorporates sci-fi and horror elements to bring an intense and fun game to the tabletop.

Brian Hassan, Head of Film Production, Well Forged Films: “I’m a huge fan of board and miniature gaming, so the chance to work with a pedigree such as Wayland Games is like a dream come true for me. The crossovers between our creative industries are obvious but rarely utilised – with this partnership and with project HOX in particular, we want to bring players the absolute best in tabletop gaming, with a very real game universe, rich in detail and bursting with personality, fantastic story-driven gameplay and of course, a beautifully crafted miniatures series.”

Richard Lawford, Managing Director, Wayland Games Ltd: “I’m super excited to be involved in this project, and I’m looking forward to the collaboration between ourselves and the amazing team over at Well Forged Films and Blitz Games Studios. Work is underway in setting up the studio and finding the best and brightest minds, skills and technologies to be part of this exciting experience.”

HOX Concept Art

There’s also a bit of concept art for their “project HOX”.

Nothing giving any idea of the possible miniatures, however. It’s mostly scenic shots of a ruined (post-apocalyptic) city.

Anyone willing to call the odds of this going via Kickstarter?

Let me know what you think!

Update:
There is a little entry on H.O.X. on Well Forged Film‘s website. Here’s what it says:

H.O.X.

Scientists have been testing a new serum, designed to strengthen the human immune system and eradicate the common cold. Evan and his best friend Jon are two of many on the trials. But what starts as a routine trial, quickly turns in to mayhem when after 24 hours the drug creates an adverse side effect, mutating the H.O.X. gene within all the subjects and turning them into mindless killing machines. Evan and Jon are caught in a race against time to work out how to stop themselves turning into monsters and save those they love.

Would not call it ‘unexpected’. With all the big companies running Kickstarters left and right was just a question of when in my opinion. If you see all the millions these games raise (and then be delivered a year or more later) its no surprise to me.

      True. Especially the Zombie part.

Should branch off my own site called Zombiestarter ™ right now and be a millionaire ;)

But I agree, it does make sense. Not only with Kickstarters making good money, but also with certain large miniature games companies giving third-party retailers, especially those relying heavily on online-sales, a tough time.

It’s certainly the prudent thing to do for Wayland Games.
