The 4th (!) week of Warhammer 40K Ork-releases? Is it just me, or does this feel a lot longer than when Games Workshop was doing these releases once a month?
Anyhow… at least in this one we get the Ork Codex, which went up for pre-orders and will arrive in gamers’ hands next weekend!
#1 – The New Ork Codex
There are two new single-sprue Ork-characters: the Painboy and the Mek. The real relief, however, is that we’re finally getting the Codex. The White Dwarf preview shows of another Ray Swanland cover, which is always cool.
Perhaps a bit more interesting, it shows the new layout for the Gorkanaut and Morkanaut unit entries. Not entire surprise, 7th Edition Codexes now come with miniature-pictures (instead of art) and smaller fluff-descriptions, similar to how they have been presented in the White Dwarf already.
There is also a limited edition, which includes a (future?) supplement on Ghazghkull and art cards. Spot-on rumour-mongering there by Lords of War gaming back in the 1st week of may (so I assume their Space-Wolves-next-rumours are also solid).
#2 – Ork Datacards
New armies used to get a deck of cards with psychic powers (if they had any). Now we get psychic powers and (!) a set of tactical objectives, 6 specific to the army, Orks in this case.
I’ll likely keep using the charts in the book, but it looks like a neat add-on.
The White Dwarf also features a “battle-report” showcasing Orks in a Maelstrom of War mission. Too bad these battle-reports are so short these days. It would’ve been interesting to see the cards played out in more depth.
#3 – The Hobbit?
Strange and mysterious pictures in this White Dwarf. Some kinda game about Dwarfs and Halflings that isn’t Warhammer Fantasy?
How did these get in there?
#4 – Orks Looted Wagon
Among the plethora of Ork-content, there is also a “White Dwarf Exclusive” Looted Wagon. It’s probably right to assume, that this won’t be in the Codex (or why would they call it “White Dwarf exclusive”?). It even is somewhat of a rushed-job, as the stat-line has copy-&-paste errors, talking about a Unit Composition of 1 Gorkanaut, instead of a Looted Wagon.
Either way, this entry alone likely makes this a White Dwarf that Ork players will want to have for the Looted Wagon rules.
#5 – Thoughts?
Next week: More Orks!
Well, for me, the overwhelming feeling with this issue was “the end is in sight”. It is great to see Ork-players getting all the new miniatures, but I still think GW is not really using the weekly release pace in a way that makes it more entertaining. Quite the opposite, while I never had an issue with monthly White Dwarfs, the current approach feels strangely more long-winded.
Let me know what you think!
